This textbook represents a comprehensive overview of the diagnosis, workup, and anatomical-based treatment of a vast number of complex knee pathologies. Many of these pathologies echo the famous words of the Father of Sports Medicine, Jack Hughston,MD, who noted that many of these problems see you, but you do not necessarily see them.
Of course, all complex knee pathologies circle back to one’s knowledge of anatomy and the ability to perform a comprehensive physical examination. Along with this knowledge, it is important to recognize the biomechanical function of each individual anatomic structure, both statically and dynamically, so that when a problem is identified, one can develop a comprehensive differential diagnosis of the potential secondary stabilizers that can be affected and that can result in pathological increase in motion. Finally, treating these injuries in a timely manner with anatomical based reconstructions that are biomechanically and clinically validated (when indicated) will aid in maximizing the chances for a successful outcome. This is what allows one to become a successful complex knee surgeon.
The authors have worked hard to provide an internationally based group of stellar orthopaedic surgeons to develop the chapters and provide a focused overview of the basics and high-level background to allow one to improve their knowledge base incomplex knee injuries. We hope that you find this textbook to be stimulating and a resource for many years to come.
